Bath

Established by the Romans due to its natural hot spring Bath developed into a popular resort town in the Elizabethan and Georgian periods, resulting in the city’s elegant architecture today. Located approximately 40 minutes drive south of Owlpen, it’s a great place to visit and where Tom’s parents live.

Bath’s most famous attractions are the Roman baths (which are well worth a visit), the Abbey and the modern spa that uses the natural thermal water. While wandering the well know trio of Georgian streets; the circle, square and crescent is another highlight. The canal offers a picturesque alternative from the busyness of the city, it’s perfect for a run or a walk towards Bradford-on-Avon.

There are many good pubs and cafes in Bath: the Raven and Salamander are popular cosy pubs on a narrow cobbled street featured in many period dramas.

Bristol

The larger neighbouring city of Bristol is just a 10min train journey from Bath, and also a 40 minute drive from Owlpen. It’s a vibrant city known for its maritime history and street art. The top attractions are Brunel’s SS Great Britain, which has been transformed into a museum, and the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The Harbourside is a nice area to explore with museums, restaurants, shops, and galleries. Clifton Village is also a good area to wander around.

Bristol is the birthplace of Banksy, and there are several of his works in this city which you can see on a self-guided street art tour.

There is also a larger array of shops including Cabot Circus shopping centre, and a thriving food scene to explore.
